It is the interpreting method employed when witnesses testify, during depositions, and in other legal settings where pauses are built into the discourse. In this mode, the interpreter listens attentively to a segment of speech, takes concise notes, and then reproduces the message accurately in the target language once the speaker pauses.

This mode demands exceptional listening skills, sharp short-term memory, and precise note-taking techniques. Interpreters must not only have a strong command of both English and Chinese but also possess a broad knowledge of legal concepts and courtroom procedures. The ability to organize information logically and deliver it fluently is essential for accuracy and credibility in court. Consecutive interpreting is also one of the required components of the state court interpreter certification exam.
