Consecutive interpreting is one of the most practical and widely used modes in court proceedings. It is the interpreting method employed when witnesses testify, during depositions, and in other legal settings where pauses are built into the discourse. In this mode, the interpreter listens attentively to a segment of speech, takes concise notes, and then reproduces the message accurately in the target language once the speaker pauses.
This mode demands exceptional listening skills, sharp short-term memory, and precise note-taking techniques. Interpreters must not only have a strong command of both English and Chinese but also possess a broad knowledge of legal concepts and courtroom procedures. The ability to organize information logically and deliver it fluently is essential for accuracy and credibility in court. Consecutive interpreting is also one of the required components of the state court interpreter certification exam.
In this course, students will receive comprehensive and systematic training designed to strengthen their memory retention, note-taking efficiency, and message delivery. The instructor will use pre-recorded witness testimonies and simulated courtroom exchanges to help students practice identifying key information, structuring notes effectively, and reproducing speech with clarity and precision.
Through guided practice, individualized feedback, and targeted exercises, students will develop the ability to interpret consecutive segments accurately, smoothly, and confidently. They will also master the skills that are indispensable for both certification exams and real-world interpreting assignments.
Who it’s for:

Tracy, Jessie, and Mia have all worked in the court interpreting field for many years and have a proven record of success in preparing students for certification exams. As former instructors in the UCLA Extension Court Interpreting Program, they have guided numerous students to pass the California Court Interpreter Exam year after year.
Our instructors not only provide systematic and rigorous in-class training but also share invaluable professional insights and first-hand industry experience to help students excel both in their studies and future careers.
Our classes are conducted online via Zoom, allowing you to receive top-quality, instructor-led training from the comfort of your home. No commute, no boundaries. You are just one click away from advancing your interpreting career.
We offer small class setting, so that every student gets enough attention. Classes will form with as little as three students. Spots are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Our Consecutive Interpreting Boot Camp will take place from February 28 to March 28, with classes held every Saturday afternoon. Each session lasts 2.5 hours and focuses on intensive skill development through guided practice, real-time interpreting exercises, and targeted feedback.
Consecutive interpreting skills are built through consistent self-practice beyond the classroom. We recommend that students make daily efforts to read widely, practice interpreting short segments, and record their own renditions for review. By analyzing your recordings and applying the instructor’s feedback, you will gradually refine your note-taking methods, improve accuracy, and develop a smoother, more confident delivery.

The course incorporates courtroom-based materials and mock exam exercises designed to reflect real interpreting situations. All practice passages are selected to mirror the difficulty, structure, and terminology of the state certification exam.
You’ll learn how to take effective notes, improve your short-term memory, and manage your delivery under pressure. The course will also help you organize information logically and convey meaning naturally and fluently.
Both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting present their own challenges. Consecutive interpreting requires strong memory and note-taking techniques, whereas simultaneous interpreting involves instant comprehension and delivery. They are equally demanding in different aspects of the interpreting process.
