Simultaneous interpreting is one of the most demanding yet essential skills for professional court interpreters. It is the mode most frequently used during court proceedings, where the interpreter continuously renders speech in real time for individuals with limited English proficiency (LEPs) without interrupting the speaker. This mode allows the court to operate smoothly and efficiently while ensuring that all parties fully understand the proceedings.
Because of its fast-paced nature, simultaneous interpreting requires interpreters to possess an exceptional command of both English and Chinese, a solid understanding of legal terminology, and the ability to process and reproduce complex ideas instantly. Accuracy, concentration, and stamina are key.
In this course, students will receive systematic training to build the mental agility and linguistic precision necessary for high-level interpreting. The instructor will use multiple drills to strengthen listening and speaking coordination, short-term memory, and rapid reformulation skills.
Through repeated practice, feedback, and intensive training sessions, students will gain confidence and fluency in handling real court scenarios and be well-prepared for the simultaneous interpreting portion of the state court interpreter certification exam.
